 WE PREPARE TO WORSHIP GOD

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God”

Corrie ten Boom

PRELUDE

WELCOME

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES

Response:  #82 “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus”                                        Glory to God Hymnal

CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively, based on Luke 1:68-74)

Let us praise the Lord, the God of Israel!

God has come to the help of the people and has set them free.

God has provided for us a Savior, a descendant of David.

God promised through the prophets long ago to save us from our enemies.

God promised to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember the covenant.

God promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve God without fear.

*HYMN:  #97    “Watchman, Tell Us of the Night”                                              Glory to God Hymnal

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)

Patient God, forgive our lack of faith in your loving power.  We look around us and all that we see is what we don’t have.  We fail to notice the daily blessings you lavish upon us.  Clear our blindness to the needs of others.  Strengthen us and move us from our lame excuses for not serving you.  Help us to truly listen to one another with loving and generous hearts.

Heal us and make us ready to be your disciples.

In Jesus’ name, we pray …

Silent prayers of confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*HYMN:  #146   “Gentle Mary Laid Her Child”                                                               Glory to God Hymnal

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (in unison)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.  Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.  Amen.  (The Apostles’ Creed)
