WE PREPARE TO WORSHIP GOD

“In the midst of darkness, light persists.”  Mahatma Gandhi

PRELUDE

WELCOME

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES

Response:   #82   “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus                                         Glory to God Hymnal

CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively, from Psalm 122)

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the Lord’s house”.

And now we are here, standing inside the gates of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is a city restored in beautiful order and harmony.

This is where the tribes of Israel come to give thanks to the Lord according to God’s                     command.

Here the kings of Israel sat to judge their people.

May there be peace inside your walls and safety in your palaces.

*HYMN:  #88 “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” (1st 4 verses)                                  Glory to God Hymnal

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Caring God, we find it so easy to let the ways things look today change the way we look at the kingdom of heaven.  Forgive us when we fail to trust in your grace and mercy.  Free us from these burdens that we may again look to you as the source of our hope.  Be near us as we wait for the time of our salvation.  In the name of your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray…

Silent prayers of confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*HYMN:  #203 “Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love”                                                       Glory to God Hymnal

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (in unison)

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.  Jesus proclaimed the reign of God, preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the broken-hearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the Gospel.  (from “A Brief Statement of Faith”)
