"If music be the food of love, play on!"  William Shakespeare

I was watching the movie "Singing in the Rain" last weekend and it made me really think about the importance of music in everything we do. In the movie, the film industry was still doing 'silent' pictures at the beginning of the film. But those films were certainly not silent. It is true that you can watch a movie without music and it can be powerful. However, what made the silent films so effective, in my view anyway, were the soundtracks underneath. It is same with a lot of things--including church services.

A church may label a service traditional or contemporary, but what really changes? To me, it's most often the hymns that are chosen and played. You wouldn't sing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" at a contemporary service and you wouldn't sing "Awesome God" at a traditional one. As our church doesn't have nor necessarily need a service dedicated solely to contemporary worship music, I try to make your worship experience a musically diverse one by playing a mixture of traditional, contemporary, gospel, jazz, country western, and classical music. I enjoy being able to play such a broad range of music and I want to thank everyone for not only keeping an open mind, but for coming up and letting me know when you enjoy something that I have played.

This church is very lucky to have such wonderful talent. I realized the other day that we have 14 choir members. That is 25% of the members of this church. It's 50% when you count the individuals that attend church regularly. I am so impressed. It is no wonder that sound fills the sanctuary-we few but proud! We also have a worship committee that works tirelessly to make sure that our worship experience, musically and otherwise, is a unique and memorable one.

I want to end by thanking everyone who helped to make the musical events in August so special--namely Carol Lee and Tom Iverson, Pastor Sandra, Holly Powers, Sarie and Wayne Doverspike and Mike Bolgrihn. I really appreciate the time and effort everyone put in to make the hymn sing and the outdoor worship service so wonderful!
